Building on the success of our 7th-graders' Pt. Reyes trip (now in its fourth year) UPA has added overnight environmental education programs in 6th and 8th grades. This means that all UPA students have this enriching opportunity EVERY year.
Our 6th graders participate in the Camping in Presidio program, while our 7th-graders spend two nights at Point Reyes National Seashore. The pinnacle adventure is our 8th-grade backpacking trip in Big Basin Redwoods State Park (pictured in this gallery). On this trip students and staff pack in all the gear they need to survive (tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, water filters, and food). The trip features a 10-mile hike to the beautiful Berry Falls and a "night hike" to the ocean.
In each experience, students build personal confidence and trust in their team. UPA's WILD program (Wilderness, Independence, Leadership Development) also fosters environmental stewardship and ensures equitable access to our state and national parks.
Thanks to all who help to make this ambitious undertaking possible, especially Bay Area Wilderness Training for training UPA staff and providing access to the gear needed.
